Other cultures have also created mosaics with locally available materials. Stone is prominent in many, but as man progressed in creating new items, ceramics and glass were also used to create mosaic pieces. The scenes and people depicted have been used to identify different cultures throughout history. The Romans spread across much of the Mediterranean area and brought their mosaic art with them. This allows art historians to identify their work in many places around the modern world.
